Supervisor Development

Many supervisors are appointed because they are really good at their work, or have been with the company the longest. The appointment to supervisor changes their job from being responsible for doing the work to being accountable for getting the work done properly by their team.

This accountability means the buck stops with the supervisor. When the business has an important deadline or is unusually busy, how does the supervisor cope? They frequently do the work themselves! This leads to a cycle of the team feeling that their supervisor has no confidence in their ability. They become demotivated and feel a low sense of worth. The supervisors respond to this situation by doing even more of the work themselves and not leading their teams - the supervisor turns into the "superworker"! In turn, this results in the supervisor becoming demotivated by the amount of work s/he is required to perform. How often have you heard, “I don’t get paid enough to do this, I wish I was just one of the team”?

The skills required to be an effective supervisor are not difficult to master but, like any skill, appear so if we are not shown how.

Our 2-day Supervisor Skills Development Programme is designed for participants requiring the fundamental level of skills for their role as supervisor or junior manager. The programme materials and facilitation techniques are based on international best-practice behaviour used by outstanding supervisors.

We work in partnership with our clients to design a tailored Supervisor Training Course that will meet your specific training needs, that is pitched at the right level for your group of supervisors, and is set entirely within YOUR own working context.

An example of topics explored in a standard Supervisor Skills Development Programme:

  • What is a supervisor’s role?
  • Engaged, not engaged, and actively disengaged team members and their impact to the business and supervisor
  • Personal insight profile
  • Communication – your personal style
  • Asking effective questions
  • Active listening
  • Stages of learning
  • Personal leadership style
  • Effective delegation
  • Dealing with conflict
  • Providing effective feedback
  • Building trust
  • Engaging your team
